Menai Observatory

About the Project

How Wales’ first catchment-to-coast environmental observatory will connect our rivers, estuaries and the Menai Strait through science, community monitoring and local knowledge.

Giving everyone the chance to play a part in protecting our waters.

How do you monitor water quality from source to sea?

The Menai Observatory is bringing together different types of monitoring to build a much bigger picture of water quality across the Menai Bioregion.
In the Menai Strait
Automated DGT samplers will be deployed from boats to measure the cumulative impact of nutrients and pollutants over time. Unlike a single water sample, DGTs give us a time-integrated picture of what’s happening in the water.
In our estuaries
Chemcatcher® passive samplers will help detect a wide range of chemicals, including pharmaceuticals, pesticides and industrial compounds.

In our rivers and catchments

Our Lab Dŵr programme will work with volunteers, communities and partners to collect environmental data across the catchment.
By bringing all this information together, we can start to understand the connections between land, rivers, estuaries and sea

The goal?

Better data → better decisions → healthier waters
